And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

In the book of Joshua, after the Israelites had conquered much of the Promised Land, the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh settled east of the Jordan River. When these tribes built a large altar, the other Israelite tribes feared it might be for worshiping other gods, potentially causing division. Phinehas, the priest, and the leaders went to investigate, confirmed it was a symbol of unity, and then returned to report back to the rest of Israel.
