After conquering the Promised Land, the Israelites established six cities of refuge as God had commanded Moses. These were special cities where someone who accidentally killed another person could flee for protection from the victim's family, who had the right to seek revenge under ancient law. Three cities were designated on the west side of the Jordan River and three on the east side.
