And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.
In the Book of Joshua, after the Israelites had conquered much of Canaan under Joshua's leadership, the land was divided among the twelve tribes as part of God's promise to give them an inheritance. The tribe of Dan found their allotted territory insufficient for their growing population, leading them to seek expansion by conquering the nearby city of Leshem through military action. They then settled there and renamed it Dan to honor their tribal ancestor.
