In the first century, Jewish weddings were community celebrations that could last several days, and providing ample wine was a sign of hospitality and honor to guests. At the wedding in Cana, the hosts had run out of wine, which would have been a source of embarrassment in that culture. Jesus performed his first recorded miracle here by instructing the servants to draw water from large stone jars and take it to the master of the feast, turning it into wine to reveal his divine authority.
