Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride: for the land shall be desolate.

This prophecy was given by Jeremiah in the final decades before Babylon destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC. The people of Judah had repeatedly turned away from God to worship idols and ignored His warnings through the prophets. Jeremiah was foretelling the complete devastation that would come when the Babylonians conquered the land, taking most people into exile and leaving the cities empty.
