And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.
This verse is set during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem around 587 BC, when the prophet Jeremiah was imprisoned for his unpopular messages urging surrender to avoid destruction. King Zedekiah of Judah had been swayed by his advisors to rebel against Babylon, leading to the city's downfall despite Jeremiah's warnings. In this prophecy, Jeremiah uses vivid imagery to depict the betrayal and humiliation Zedekiah would face, symbolizing how his poor alliances had trapped him in inevitable defeat.
