This verse comes after King Jehoiakim burned the scroll containing God's warnings that Jeremiah had dictated to his scribe Baruch. Despite multiple opportunities to repent, the king and his court showed contempt for God's word by destroying it. This was during the final years before Babylon would destroy Jerusalem in 586 BC.
