During the fourth year of King Zedekiah's reign over Judah, around 594 BC, the kingdom was facing severe threats from the Babylonian empire under Nebuchadnezzar, as Judah struggled with rebellion and impending exile. Jeremiah, a true prophet called by God, was warning the people of judgment for their unfaithfulness, while false prophets like Hananiah offered misleading messages of peace and security. This verse sets the stage in the temple, where public confrontations between prophets highlighted the tension between divine truth and popular deception.
