This prophecy was given during the time when the Assyrian Empire was the dominant military power in the ancient Near East, around 700 BC. The Assyrians had already conquered the northern kingdom of Israel and were threatening Jerusalem and the southern kingdom of Judah. Isaiah was encouraging the people that despite Assyria's seemingly unstoppable military might, God would supernaturally intervene to defeat them.
