Isaiah was speaking to the kingdom of Judah around 740-680 BC, during a time when the wealthy and powerful were exploiting the poor and defenseless. The society had become corrupt, with judges taking bribes and ignoring the needs of orphans and widows who had no legal protectors. God was calling his people back to the values of justice and compassion that were central to their covenant relationship with him.
