This occurs during a seven-year famine that affected the entire known world, including Canaan where Jacob's family lived. Egypt was the only place with stored grain because of Joseph's wise preparation during seven years of abundance. Jacob's family was completely dependent on Egypt for survival, though they didn't yet know that Joseph, whom they thought was dead, was actually the Egyptian official in charge of grain distribution.
