In the book of Genesis, Joseph was the favored son of Jacob, which fueled jealousy among his brothers and led them to plot against him. When Reuben, one of the brothers who had intended to rescue Joseph, returned to the pit, he discovered Joseph was gone and voiced his anguish over the consequences.
