In the 6th century BC, the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar conquered Jerusalem and looted the temple's gold and silver vessels, taking them to Babylon as spoils of war. Decades later, the Persian king Cyrus defeated Babylon and issued a decree allowing the exiled Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their temple. As part of this, Cyrus ordered the return of the sacred vessels to Sheshbazzar, whom he appointed as governor to oversee the restoration.
