This occurs during the second plague God sent upon Egypt when Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go. Egyptian magicians were known practitioners of various forms of sorcery and were considered powerful advisors to Pharaoh. Their ability to replicate some of the early plagues initially hardened Pharaoh's heart, as it seemed to diminish the uniqueness of God's power in his eyes.
