This verse describes part of the elaborate priestly garments God commanded Moses to make for Aaron, the first high priest of Israel. The breastplate contained twelve precious stones, each engraved with the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Aaron would wear this when entering the Most Holy Place to intercede for the people before God.
