For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour.
This law was part of the civil code God gave to Israel after their exodus from Egypt, establishing a just legal system for the newly formed nation. In ancient times, disputes over livestock and property were common and could lead to ongoing feuds between families or tribes. The requirement to pay double served both as punishment for wrongdoing and as a deterrent to prevent false accusations or theft.
