This is the third of the Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai around 1400 BC. In ancient Hebrew culture, a person's name represented their character and essence, so God's name was considered especially sacred. Using God's name 'in vain' included not just casual swearing, but also making false oaths, empty promises in God's name, or claiming to speak for God without his authority.
