This is the first of the Ten Commandments that God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai after rescuing the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. The surrounding nations worshipped many different gods made of wood, stone, and metal, and the Israelites had been exposed to Egyptian polytheism for 400 years. God was establishing that His relationship with His people would be exclusive and that He alone was the true God worthy of worship.
