This command was given to Moses and the Israelites on the night of the first Passover, just before their exodus from Egypt after 430 years of slavery. The Festival of Unleavened Bread was to last seven days and commemorate their hasty departure from Egypt, when they didn't have time to let their bread rise. This became one of the most important annual celebrations in Jewish culture, still observed today as Passover.
