Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
In the Book of Esther, set in the Persian Empire during the reign of King Ahasuerus (likely Xerxes I in the 5th century BC), the king was selecting a new queen after deposing Queen Vashti for her disobedience. Esther, a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai, was among the young women brought to the palace, and she demonstrated wisdom by following the advice of Hegai, the king's eunuch in charge of the women. This act of humility helped her stand out in a highly competitive and culturally stratified environment where favor from authorities could determine one's fate.
