This is the first of the Ten Commandments that Moses is repeating to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. The Israelites had just spent 40 years in the wilderness after leaving Egypt, where they had been surrounded by polytheistic cultures that worshiped multiple gods. God was establishing His exclusive claim on their worship and loyalty as they prepared to enter Canaan, which was also filled with pagan nations and their false gods.
