This occurs at the end of Moses' 40-year leadership of Israel through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. Moses had been told by God that he would see the Promised Land but not enter it because of his disobedience at Meribah. He died at age 120 on Mount Nebo, within sight of the land God had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
