This verse is part of the curses Moses proclaimed would come upon Israel if they disobeyed God's laws after entering the Promised Land. Moses was preparing the Israelites for life in Canaan, warning them of the serious consequences of abandoning their covenant relationship with God. These warnings were given just before the Israelites crossed the Jordan River to possess the land God had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
