And it was told king David, saying, The LORD hath blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness.

In the time of King David, around 1000 BC, the Ark of the Covenant was a sacred chest that represented God's presence among the Israelites and was central to their worship. After a previous attempt to move the Ark resulted in a man's death due to mishandling it, David left it at the house of Obed-edom out of fear and caution. When David learned that Obed-edom's household was being blessed because of the Ark's presence, he decided to bring it to Jerusalem with a heart full of joy and reverence.
