This verse comes after King David arranged for Uriah the Hittite to be killed in battle to cover up David's adultery with Uriah's wife, Bathsheba. Uriah was one of David's loyal soldiers who had refused to go home to his wife while his fellow soldiers remained at war. Bathsheba's mourning follows the customary period of grief that widows observed in ancient Israel.
