And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.

During the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah, the Assyrian king Sennacherib was besieging Jerusalem, threatening destruction and invasion. God, through the prophet Isaiah, delivered a message of deliverance and gave this sign as a promise of restoration for the land after the crisis. It assured the people that for the first two years, they would survive on what grew naturally, and by the third year, they could resume planting, harvesting, and enjoying the fruits of their labor.
