This verse concludes the account of King Joash of Judah, who had ruled for 40 years (around 835-796 BC). Despite starting well by repairing the temple, Joash later turned away from God and even ordered the murder of Zechariah, a priest who confronted him about his unfaithfulness. His assassination by his own servants was seen as divine judgment for his apostasy and violence.
