This verse describes the period when Queen Athaliah, who had murdered most of the royal family to seize power, ruled Judah from approximately 841-835 BC. Unknown to her, baby Joash had been rescued and hidden in the temple by his aunt Jehosheba, who was married to the high priest. This was a dark time in Judah's history when worship of Baal was promoted and the Davidic royal line seemed nearly extinct.
