Jehu was a military commander who became king of Israel around 841 BC and was commanded by God to destroy the house of Ahab. Baal was a Canaanite fertility god whose worship had been promoted by Queen Jezebel and had corrupted Israel's worship of the true God. Jehu carried out God's judgment by eliminating Baal's priests, destroying his temple, and turning it into a public restroom as an act of ultimate contempt.
