King Amon had ruled Judah for only two years (642-640 BC) and followed his father Manasseh's evil practices of idolatry. His own servants assassinated him in his palace, but the common people rose up against this coup attempt. They executed the conspirators and crowned eight-year-old Josiah, who would become one of Judah's greatest reformer kings.
