In the biblical narrative, King David of Israel desired to build a permanent temple for God, but the Lord instructed him through the prophet Nathan that he would not be the one to do it because he had been a man of war. Instead, God promised that David's son, Solomon, would build the temple as a house for God's name, which is what Solomon is recalling during his prayer at the temple's dedication in 2 Chronicles 6.
