Athaliah was the daughter of the infamous King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, who had promoted Baal worship in Israel. After her son King Ahaziah died, she seized power in Judah and tried to destroy the royal family to secure her rule. During her reign, she allowed or encouraged the desecration of Solomon's temple and the promotion of Baal worship in Jerusalem.
