This verse is part of King Abijah of Judah's speech before battle against Jeroboam of Israel around 913 BC. After Solomon's kingdom split, Jeroboam had established alternative worship centers with golden calves and appointed non-Levitical priests to prevent his people from traveling to Jerusalem's temple. Abijah was condemning this departure from God's established order where only Aaron's descendants and Levites were authorized to serve as priests.
