So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
After King Solomon's death, the people of Israel approached his son Rehoboam, requesting relief from the burdensome labor and taxes that Solomon had imposed. Rehoboam foolishly rejected the wise advice of his elders and instead followed the harsh counsel of his young advisors, which sparked a rebellion led by Jeroboam. This event fulfilled a prophecy from God, spoken through the prophet Ahijah, that the kingdom would be divided as a consequence of Solomon's sins.
