There was nothing in the ark save the two tables which Moses put therein at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of Egypt.

This verse describes the contents of the ark of the covenant during Solomon's dedication of the temple around 950 BC. The ark had been the most sacred object in Israel's worship for about 500 years, containing the stone tablets God gave Moses at Mount Horeb (also called Mount Sinai) during the Exodus from Egypt. By this time, some other items that had once been stored with the ark (like Aaron's rod and a jar of manna) were no longer there.
