This verse occurs right after the dramatic split of Israel's united kingdom around 930 BC. When King Solomon's son Rehoboam refused to lighten the heavy burdens his father had placed on the people, ten northern tribes rebelled and formed their own kingdom under Jeroboam. However, the tribes of Judah and Benjamin remained loyal to Rehoboam, and many Israelites from other tribes who had settled in Judah's cities also stayed under his rule.
