In the biblical narrative of 2 Kings 3, the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom had formed an alliance to fight against the Moabites, who had rebelled after the death of King Ahab. Elisha the prophet was consulted and foretold that God would miraculously provide water for the allied armies in the desert and deliver victory over Moab. When the water appeared as prophesied, the morning sun made it look like blood to the Moabites, causing them to misinterpret it as a sign of defeat among their enemies.
