Jehoiachin became king of Judah around 597 BC during a time when the Babylonian Empire was conquering Jerusalem. His extremely short reign of only three months ended when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon captured him and took him into exile. This was part of the first major deportation of Jews to Babylon, about 11 years before Jerusalem's complete destruction.
