Jehoash (also called Joash) became king around 835 BC after the violent reign of Queen Athaliah, who had tried to kill all the royal family. He was hidden as a baby by his aunt and raised in the temple by the priest Jehoiada. His reign marked a return to proper worship of God and temple restoration.
