This occurred around 841 BC in the kingdom of Judah after King Ahaziah was killed during Jehu's revolt in Israel. Athaliah was the daughter of the infamous King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, and she had introduced Baal worship into Judah. Her massacre of the royal family was an attempt to eliminate any legitimate heirs to the throne so she could rule as queen.
