This verse is part of God's response to Solomon after the dedication of the first temple in Jerusalem. God is warning that if Israel turns away from Him and worships other gods, He will remove them from the land and allow the temple to be destroyed. This prophecy was fulfilled when the Babylonians destroyed the temple in 586 BC.
