This verse concludes the account of the Assyrian invasion of Judah around 701 BC, when the powerful Assyrian king Sennacherib threatened Jerusalem during King Hezekiah's reign. The Assyrians had already conquered the northern kingdom of Israel and were known for their brutal military tactics and complete destruction of cities that resisted them. God miraculously intervened by sending an angel who destroyed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night, forcing Sennacherib to retreat.
