This scene takes place during the coronation of seven-year-old Joash as king of Judah around 835 BC. Queen Athaliah had murdered most of the royal family to seize power, but baby Joash had been secretly hidden and raised by the priest Jehoiada. After six years, Jehoiada orchestrated a coup to restore the rightful Davidic king to the throne.
