Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
In the time of King Jehoram of Judah, who ruled around 848-841 BC and led his people into idolatry and moral decline, the kingdom faced threats of division and destruction. God had previously made an unbreakable covenant with David, as recorded in 2 Samuel 7, promising that his descendants would always have a lamp or successor on the throne. This promise ensured that, despite Jehoram's wickedness, God refrained from wiping out the house of David to fulfill His eternal word.
