So Solomon, and all the congregation with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for there was the tabernacle of the congregation of God, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.
This event takes place early in Solomon's reign when he was establishing his kingdom. The tabernacle at Gibeon was the original portable worship center that Moses had built during Israel's 40 years in the wilderness, and it remained the legitimate place of worship before Solomon built the permanent temple in Jerusalem. Gibeon was about six miles northwest of Jerusalem and served as an important religious center.
