The Amalekites were a nomadic tribe that attacked the Israelites from behind during their exodus from Egypt, targeting the weak, elderly, and stragglers (Deuteronomy 25:17-18). This attack occurred when Israel was at their most vulnerable—newly freed from slavery and traveling through the wilderness. God had promised that He would eventually deal with this unprovoked aggression against His chosen people.
