This verse describes how God supernaturally provided for the prophet Elijah during a severe drought that lasted three and a half years. Elijah had just pronounced God's judgment of drought upon Israel because of King Ahab's wickedness, and God commanded him to hide by the Brook Cherith east of the Jordan River. During this time of national famine, God used an unlikely source—unclean birds according to Jewish law—to sustain His faithful prophet.
