Jeroboam was the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel after the kingdom split around 930 BC. He had led a rebellion against Solomon's son Rehoboam and established the separate northern kingdom. Despite God giving him this opportunity, Jeroboam had turned away from God by setting up golden calves for the people to worship instead of traveling to Jerusalem.
