Jeroboam was the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel after the nation split around 930 BC. To keep his people from traveling to Jerusalem (in the rival southern kingdom) to worship, he set up golden calves at Dan and Bethel and established false worship practices. This led the entire northern kingdom away from proper worship of God, creating a pattern of idolatry that would plague Israel for generations.
