In the biblical account, King David was preparing to build a temple for God but was told by God that he could not do so because of his history as a warrior who had shed blood. Instead, God promised that David's son Solomon would be a man of peace and would bring rest to Israel from its enemies. This prophecy was given during the united monarchy period, around the 10th century BC, as David gathered materials for the temple that his successor would ultimately construct.
